The Health Care Advocacy Program will not be offered in the 2008-2009 school year as we review and revise the program parameters.
INTRODUCTION
The Health Care Advocacy Program (HCAP) provides Washington University freshmen and sophomores with the opportunity to explore the health care setting as part of an eight week patient care unit assignment at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Approximately ten to twelve assignments will be made for the 2007-2008 school year. The application will become available on line December 3, 2007.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of the eight week assignment, HCAP participants should have a working knowledge of the following concepts:
· The patient advocacy model in medicine.
· The structure and function of an integrated health care system as well as the role of the health care management team.
· The role of the empathetic practitioner in providing culturally competent health care.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Washington University premedical freshmen or sophomores with GPAs of 3.0 or higher will be considered for the program. Student from groups traditionally under represented in medicine or from disadvantaged backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The Office of Diversity Programs will interview the finalists. Finalists will be required to undergo a background check, drug screening and a TB skin test.
· Attend an Orientation/ Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) training session.
· Commit to at least 4-5 hours each week of patient care/clinical service.
· Submit a journal and a two-page paper (double-spaced) on your experience as a patient advocate.
· Attend a debriefing session and complete an evaluation form at the end of the program.
· Complete a feedback form from the Career Center for course credit.
